Ridge Cappings in Auckland — Custom Made & Powder Coated

Ridge cappings are the formed metal profiles that cover the apex of a pitched roof, sealing the junction between two roof planes and keeping water and wind out at the highest point.

What Are Ridge Cappings?

The ridge of a pitched roof is the highest horizontal line — the apex where two sloping roof planes meet. At this junction, the roofing material (corrugated iron, tray, tile, or other) must terminate, leaving a gap at the very top of the roof. A ridge capping is the formed metal cover that spans this gap, sealing the apex against rain, wind, and driven moisture.

Ridge cappings are folded to match the pitch angle of the roof so they sit flat on both roof planes. They typically have a wide skirt on each side to lap over the roofing and provide a weathertight seal. On metal roofing they are often fixed with roofing screws through the capping into the ridge board or purlin.

Because they sit at the top of the roof and are visible from the ground, ridge cappings often have an aesthetic as well as a functional role. A powder-coated ridge capping in a colour that matches or contrasts with the roofing is a common architectural choice. We manufacture ridge cappings to order in your specified pitch angle, skirt width, and colour finish.

Where Are Ridge Cappings Used?

  • Along the ridge (apex) of all pitched roofs — gable, hip, Dutch hip, and others
  • At hip ends of hipped roofs (as hip cappings, the same profile on the hip angle)
  • On barrel or curved roof ridges where a formed radius capping is needed
  • On lean-to and skillion roofs at the high wall junction (where a ridge capping meets an apron flashing)
  • On carports, garages, and outbuildings with any form of pitched roof

Materials Available

We manufacture ridge cappings in the following materials:

  • Stainless Steel — superior corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and high-moisture environments
  • Galvanised Steel — traditional zinc-coated steel, widely used and durable
  • Aluminium — lightweight with excellent corrosion resistance, good for coastal locations and colour finishes
  • Colorsteel — pre-painted to standard roofing colours for a seamless match with the roofing sheets

Profile Options

We offer both standard profiles and custom-made to spec. We manufacture ridge cappings to drawing or sample. The key specification is the ridge angle (determined by roof pitch), the skirt width on each side, and any profile detail such as a standing seam or decorative bead. If you are replacing an existing capping, bring a sample and we will match the profile.

Colour Options

Powder coating is available on all steel and aluminium ridge cappings. As one of the most visible elements of a roof, the colour choice for a ridge capping significantly influences the overall roof appearance. Options include:

  • Colorsteel colour range — Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Sheerstone, Dune, Gull Grey, Thunder and others
  • Resene colour matching
  • Dulux colour matching
  • Full RAL colour range
  • Custom colour matching from a physical sample

Who Uses Ridge Cappings?

Our ridge capping customers include:

  • Builders — completing roofs on new builds and re-roofing projects
  • Roofers and roofing contractors — needing custom pitches, widths, or colours that stock suppliers don't carry

NZ Building Code Considerations

Flashings play a critical role in meeting the weathertightness requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Ridge cappings must be wide enough to lap over the roofing material on each side by the required minimum distance, and must be fixed to prevent wind uplift. Always consult your building consent documentation for specific requirements.

Related Flashings

Ridge cappings sit at the top of a complete roofing flashing system:

  • Barge Flashings — for the rake edges at gable ends where the ridge capping terminates
  • Valley Flashings — for the internal junctions below the ridge on complex roof plans
  • Roof Flashings — for all other roof junction details
  • Drip Edges — for the bottom edge of the same roof at the eave

Frequently Asked Questions

The angle of the ridge capping must match the pitch of the roof. Provide us with the roof pitch (in degrees or as a rise/run ratio) and we will fold the capping to the correct angle. We can also fold to a sample piece if you are replacing an existing ridge capping.

Yes. We can powder coat ridge cappings in any RAL, Resene, Dulux, or Colorsteel colour to match your roofing, fascias, or architectural specification.

Yes. Hip cappings serve a similar function at the external corners of a hipped roof. They are typically the same profile as ridge cappings but cut and folded to the hip angle. Provide your roof pitch and hip angle and we will manufacture accordingly.

Ridge cappings are typically fixed through the capping into the ridge board or purlin, with fixings set back from the edge and covered by the lap of the next capping section. We manufacture the capping to your specified dimensions — fixing method is the installer's responsibility.

We manufacture ridge cappings in the lengths you specify. We can manufacture flashings up to 3 metres in length. Where the ridge run exceeds one section, sections are lapped with the uphill piece over the downhill piece. Contact us with your total ridge length for a quote.
