Drip Edges in Auckland — Custom Made & Powder Coated
Drip edges are metal profiles installed at roof edges and eaves that direct water off the edge cleanly, preventing it from running back under the roofing material or down the fascia.

A drip edge is a formed metal profile installed at the perimeter edge of a roof or cladding surface. Its function is simple but important: water flowing off a roof or down a wall has surface tension and will follow the underside of the material unless interrupted. A drip edge provides a downward-angled or hooked lip at the edge that breaks this surface tension and causes water to drip cleanly away from the building structure below.
Without drip edges, water runs back under the roofing material at the eave and wets the fascia board, the rafter ends, and the top of the wall. Over time this causes rot, paint failure, and structural damage. A correctly installed drip edge channels water directly into the gutter and protects the fascia and eave framing.
Drip edges are used at the eave of pitched roofs, at the rake edge of gable ends, at the perimeter of flat roofs and decks, and at the base of wall cladding above gutters. We manufacture custom drip edge profiles to order in your specified dimensions, material, and colour.
Where Are Drip Edges Used?
- Along eaves at the bottom edge of pitched roofs, directing water into gutters
- Along the rake edge at gable ends, working alongside barge flashings
- At the perimeter edge of flat roofs and decks above parapet walls or gutters
- At the base of wall cladding above gutters or ground level
- At the bottom edge of fascia boards and soffits to direct water off cleanly
- At window sills where a protruding sill needs a drip groove or drip edge profile
Materials Available
We manufacture drip edges in the following materials:
- Stainless Steel — superior corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and high-moisture environments
- Galvanised Steel — traditional zinc-coated steel for applications where colour finish will be applied
- Aluminium — lightweight, excellent corrosion resistance, popular for coastal locations and powder-coated finishes
- Colorsteel — pre-painted to standard roofing colours for integration with pre-painted fascias and gutters
Profile Options
We offer both standard profiles and custom-made to spec. We manufacture drip edges to drawing or sample. Key dimensions are the horizontal face (onto the roof or cladding surface), the vertical face (down the fascia or wall), and the angle and depth of the drip lip. Standard L-profile drip edges and more complex profiles with upturned eave edges are both available.
Colour Options
Powder coating is available on all steel and aluminium drip edges. Matching the drip edge colour to gutters, fascias, or the roofing colour creates a cohesive edge detail. Available colours include:
- Colorsteel colour range — Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Sheerstone, Dune, Gull Grey, Thunder and others
- Resene colour matching
- Dulux colour matching
- Full RAL colour range
- Custom colour matching from a physical sample
Who Uses Drip Edges?
Our drip edge customers include:
- Builders — detailing eave and rake edges on new builds and re-roof projects
- Roofers — fitting drip edges as part of a complete roofing edge system
- Architects — specifying custom profiles where standard drip edge details don't suit the design
NZ Building Code Considerations
Flashings play a critical role in meeting the weathertightness requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Drip edges must be correctly installed to direct water into the gutter or away from the building structure. Always consult your building consent documentation for specific requirements on eave and edge details.
Related Flashings
Drip edges work alongside these complementary flashing types:
- Barge Flashings — for the rake edge of gable ends where the drip edge terminates
- Parapet Cappings — for flat roof perimeters above parapet walls
- Ridge Cappings — for the apex of the same pitched roof
- Cover Flashings — for joints and penetrations in the same roof or wall plane
Frequently Asked Questions
A drip edge guides water off the edge of a roof or wall surface cleanly. The metal profile has a downward-angled lip that causes water to drip free of the structure below rather than running back under the roofing material, down the fascia, or into the wall. This prevents water damage to fascias, rafters, and wall framing.
They serve a similar function but are often used in different locations. Eave flashings are typically installed at the bottom edge of a pitched roof at the eave line. Drip edges is a broader term that includes profiles at gable edges, flat roof perimeters, wall bases, and any location where a controlled drip-off point is needed.
Yes. We can powder coat drip edges in any RAL, Resene, Dulux, or Colorsteel colour. Matching the drip edge colour to the fascia, gutter, or roofing gives a clean, integrated finish.
Galvanised steel and aluminium are both popular choices for drip edges. Aluminium is preferred where corrosion resistance is a priority (coastal locations) or where a powder-coated colour finish is required. Colorsteel is a good option where the drip edge needs to match a pre-painted roofing or gutter colour. Stainless steel is also available for demanding environments.
