Parapet Cappings in Auckland — Custom Made & Powder Coated

Parapet cappings are the metal covers that sit on top of parapet walls, directing rainwater away from the wall core and preventing water ingress on flat-roofed buildings.

What Are Parapet Cappings?

A parapet is a low wall that rises above the roof level at the perimeter of a flat or low-pitch roof. Without a capping, the top of this wall is exposed to rain and will absorb water, eventually leading to structural damage, efflorescence, and moisture penetration into the building interior. A parapet capping is the formed metal profile that sits over the top of the parapet wall, shedding water to one or both sides.

Parapet cappings must be sized to the wall thickness, include appropriate drip edges to prevent water from running down the face of the wall, and in many cases incorporate a pressed fall toward the inner (roof) face so water drains back onto the roof membrane and into the drainage system.

At Coating Lab we manufacture parapet cappings to your wall dimensions in your choice of material and powder coat colour. Whether you need a simple flat cap or a shaped profile to suit an architectural specification, we fold to order.

Where Are Parapet Cappings Used?

  • Tops of parapet walls on residential and commercial flat-roofed buildings
  • Boundary walls that rise above the roof line on multi-storey buildings
  • Architectural parapets on mono-pitch and skillion roofs
  • Perimeter walls around roof terraces and decks
  • Tops of freestanding walls that require weather protection
  • Parapet corners where two wall planes meet (corner capping sections)

Materials Available

We manufacture parapet cappings in the following materials:

  • Stainless Steel — superior corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and high-moisture environments
  • Galvanised Steel — traditional zinc-coated steel with established track record in NZ construction
  • Aluminium — lightweight with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly suitable for coastal environments and powder-coated colour finishes
  • Colorsteel — pre-painted steel in standard roofing colours for an integrated aesthetic

Profile Options

We offer both standard profiles and custom-made to spec. All profiles can be made to drawing or sample. Typical parapet capping profiles include flat tops with drip edges, sloped tops with single or double fall, and coped corners. If you have architectural drawings, we work from those. If you need to match an existing profile, bring a sample piece.

Colour Options

Powder coating is available on all steel and aluminium parapet cappings. Matching the capping colour to the building's cladding, roof, or window joinery creates a cohesive exterior appearance. Available colours include:

  • Colorsteel colour range — Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Sheerstone, Dune, Gull Grey, Thunder and others
  • Resene colour matching
  • Dulux colour matching
  • Full RAL colour range
  • Custom colour matching from a physical sample

Who Uses Parapet Cappings?

Our parapet capping customers include:

  • Builders — fitting cappings on new builds and remediation projects involving flat or low-pitch roofs
  • Architects and designers — specifying custom profiles and colours for commercial and residential projects
  • Commercial contractors — sourcing large runs of capping for multi-storey and commercial flat roof projects

NZ Building Code Considerations

Flashings play a critical role in meeting the weathertightness requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Parapet cappings must be correctly lapped, sealed at joints, and turned down sufficiently on each face to prevent capillary action drawing water under the capping. Always consult your building consent documentation for specific requirements relating to parapet construction and cappings.

Related Flashings

Parapet cappings are typically used alongside these flashing types:

  • Corner Flashings — for the vertical corners where parapet walls meet
  • Cover Flashings — for expansion and movement joints in parapet walls
  • Drip Edges — for the perimeter edges of the flat roof below the parapet
  • Roof Flashings — for all other roof junction weatherproofing

Frequently Asked Questions

We manufacture parapet cappings to your specified width. Provide the top-of-wall measurement and we will fold a capping with appropriate drip edges and upstands to suit your wall thickness and any required overhang.

Yes. A parapet capping should have a slight fall toward the inner (roof) side so water drains onto the roof and into the drainage system rather than running down the exterior of the building. We can incorporate a pressed fall into the capping profile.

Aluminium and galvanised steel are both popular choices for parapet cappings. Aluminium offers excellent corrosion resistance particularly for coastal locations. Stainless steel is also available for high-corrosion environments. Colorsteel is a good option when the capping needs to match pre-painted roofing or cladding colour without powder coating.

Yes. We can powder coat parapet cappings in any RAL, Resene, Dulux, or Colorsteel colour. Powder coating provides a durable, UV-stable finish that integrates the capping with the building's colour scheme.

Contact us with the wall width, total run length required, material preference, and finish. We will provide a quote. Turnaround is typically 1–2 days for simple orders and 3–5 days for complex orders. For complex profiles or large quantities, a drawing or sketch speeds up the quoting process.
