Colorsteel is a pre-painted steel product widely used for roofing and cladding in New Zealand. It comes in a range of colours — including Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Sheerstone, Dune, Gull Grey, and Thunder — and is available in a limited selection of stock flashing profiles through roofing suppliers.
The problem arises on any job that requires a flashing type, profile dimension, or custom angle that isn't available in the stock Colorsteel range. Non-standard profiles simply don't exist in pre-painted form — which means the builder or roofer has to either use an unmatched flashing (which looks wrong and may be visible) or source a custom solution.
At Coating Lab we solve this by manufacturing the flashing to your required profile and dimension, and then powder coating it to match your Colorsteel colour by name. The result is a flashing that integrates seamlessly with the rest of the roofing or cladding, without the colour mismatch of an off-the-shelf alternative.
The Problem: When Stock Colorsteel Flashings Don't Fit
Standard Colorsteel flashing stock covers common profiles — typically straight-profile ridge cappings, standard barge angles, and a limited range of pre-folded corners. These are designed for typical residential applications on standard roof pitches. They fall short in these common situations:
- Non-standard roof pitches that require a custom fold angle
- Custom parapet capping widths to suit non-standard wall thicknesses
- Architectural profiles specified on the drawings that don't match standard stock shapes
- Barge flashings that need to match the profile of a specific corrugated or tray roofing product
- Window and door flashings in Colorsteel colours for colour-matched joinery surrounds
- Replacement flashings where the original profile is no longer available
In all of these cases, we can manufacture to specification and powder coat to match.
The Colour Matching Process
We match Colorsteel colours using powder coat formulations developed for those colour references. You provide the Colorsteel colour name and we match it as closely as possible in powder coat form. For most roofing and cladding applications the match is visually seamless from normal viewing distances.
Because powder coating is applied to a different substrate with a different surface texture from factory-applied Colorsteel paint, there may be a slight variation in sheen level. We recommend viewing a colour sample before ordering if you have tight colour tolerance requirements. Contact us to discuss.

Materials for Colorsteel-Matched Flashings
We can manufacture Colorsteel colour-matched flashings in:
- Stainless Steel — superior corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and high-moisture environments
- Galvanised Steel — traditional choice, suitable for powder coating
- Aluminium — lightweight with excellent corrosion resistance, recommended for coastal locations
Profile Options
We offer both standard profiles and custom-made to spec. Every Colorsteel-matched flashing we make is custom-manufactured to your specification. Provide us with the profile dimensions, the Colorsteel colour name, and the material preference. We work from drawings, sketches, or samples.
Who Uses Colorsteel-Matched Flashings?
Our Colorsteel-matched flashing customers include:
- Builders — completing Colorsteel-roofed homes where standard stock flashings don't cover the required profiles or dimensions
- Roofers — needing non-standard flashing types in the same colour as the roofing sheets
- Homeowners — doing renovations on existing Colorsteel-roofed homes where replacement flashings need to colour-match the original roofing
NZ Building Code Considerations
Flashings play a critical role in meeting the weathertightness requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. The colour match does not affect the weathertightness performance of the flashing — what matters is the profile, material, installation detail, and sealing. Always consult your building consent documentation for specific requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Pre-painted Colorsteel flashings are available in stock profiles — typically ridge cappings, barge flashings, and a limited range of standard angles. If your job requires a non-standard profile, a custom dimension, or a flashing type that isn't stocked in the colour you need, you will need a custom-made solution. We manufacture any profile to your specification and powder coat it to match your Colorsteel colour.
We match Colorsteel colours by name using powder coat formulations developed for those colour references. The match is close but it is a powder coat on a different substrate — there may be a slight variation in sheen level compared to the factory-applied coating. For most roofing and cladding applications this is not noticeable. We recommend viewing a colour sample before ordering if you have tight colour tolerance requirements.

Yes. Powder coating can be applied to aluminium as well as steel, so we can manufacture flashings in aluminium and powder coat them to your Colorsteel colour reference. Aluminium is often preferred for coastal locations due to its corrosion resistance.
Yes. If you have a physical sample of the colour you need to match — whether an existing flashing, a piece of roofing, or a painted surface — bring it in and we can assess whether we can match it with our powder coat range. Aged colours may have faded from their original specification, which affects how closely any new coating will match.
