What Are Barge Flashings?

Barge flashings — also called barge boards, gable flashings, or rake flashings — run along the sloped edge of a pitched roof at the gable end. At this exposed edge, the roofing material, the rafter ends, and any timber barge board below are all vulnerable to wind-driven rain. A barge flashing forms a weather-resistant metal cap that covers the roof edge and deflects water back onto the roof surface.

The profile of a barge flashing must suit both the roofing profile beneath it (corrugated, tray, or flat) and the amount of overhang required to protect the wall below. On homes with visible barge boards, the flashing also has an aesthetic role — a colour-matched or contrasting powder coat finish can significantly improve the kerb appeal of the roofline.

At Coating Lab we manufacture barge flashings to order, matched to your roofing profile and folded to your specified dimensions in your choice of material and colour finish.

Where Are Barge Flashings Used?

  • Along gable-end rakes on all types of pitched roof
  • Above fascia boards at gable ends where the roof terminates
  • On lean-to and skillion roofs at the uphill or side rakes
  • On dormer gable ends that protrude through a main roof
  • On garage roofs and outbuildings with exposed gable ends

Materials Available

We manufacture barge flashings in the following materials:

  • Stainless Steel — superior corrosion resistance, ideal for coastal and high-moisture environments
  • Galvanised Steel — traditional zinc-coated steel, suitable where painting or powder coating will be applied
  • Aluminium — lightweight, excellent corrosion resistance, good base for powder coating
  • Colorsteel — pre-painted steel to match standard roofing colours for a seamless finish without powder coating

Profile Options

We offer both standard profiles and custom-made to spec. We manufacture barge flashings to drawing or sample. The key dimensions are the roof pitch, the roofing profile beneath the barge, the required overhang width, and the depth of any upstand. Bring a sample piece or sketch and we will fold to match.

Colour Options

Barge flashings are highly visible and benefit from a colour-matched or architecturally considered finish. Powder coating options include:

  • Colorsteel colour range — Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Sheerstone, Dune, Gull Grey, Thunder and others
  • Resene colour matching
  • Dulux colour matching
  • Full RAL colour range
  • Custom colour matching from a physical sample

Who Uses Barge Flashings?

Our barge flashing customers include:

  • Builders — fitting barge flashings on new builds and re-roof projects
  • Roofers — needing custom profiles that match specific roofing systems
  • Homeowners — replacing damaged or rusted barge flashings on existing homes

NZ Building Code Considerations

Flashings play a critical role in meeting the weathertightness requirements of the New Zealand Building Code. Barge flashings must have sufficient overlap with the roofing material to prevent wind-driven rain from getting underneath, and should be fixed to prevent uplift. Always consult your building consent documentation for specific requirements.

Related Flashings

Barge flashings are part of a complete roofing edge system that includes:

  • Roof Flashings — the broader family of weathertight junction profiles for pitched roofs
  • Apron Flashings — for roof-to-wall junctions at lean-tos, dormers, and chimneys
  • Drip Edges — for the bottom edge of roofs at the eave
  • Ridge Cappings — for the apex of pitched roofs

Frequently Asked Questions

A fascia runs horizontally at the eave (bottom) of a roof and supports the guttering. A barge flashing runs diagonally along the rake (sloped edge) at the gable end, covering the exposed edge of the roofing and protecting the barge board beneath it from water.

Yes. We manufacture barge flashings to your specific dimensions and can match the profile to your existing or new roofing. Bring a sample or provide a drawing and we will fold to suit.

Galvanised steel, aluminium, and Colorsteel are all commonly used for barge flashings. If you want a colour-matched finish, we recommend aluminium with powder coating, or Colorsteel if the colour matches a standard pre-painted option. Stainless steel is also available for high-corrosion environments.

Barge flashings are typically fixed through the top face into the barge board or rafter end, with fixings concealed under the roofing sheet overlap. We manufacture flashings to the specified dimensions — fixing method is the installer's responsibility.

Yes. We powder coat barge flashings to any colour — RAL, Resene, Dulux, Colorsteel colour names, or custom match from a sample. Contact us for a quote.
