Why Trailers Need Proper Coating

Trailers take a beating. They're towed through road salt spray, driven through puddles, exposed to UV, and — in the case of boat trailers — regularly dunked in salt or fresh water. Paint on a trailer can start rusting within a season, especially at welds and joints where moisture gets in under the surface.

Powder coating forms a continuous, sealed shell over the metal. When properly applied over sandblasted bare steel, it provides far better corrosion resistance than paint, doesn't peel or flake, and holds up to the impact of gravel and road debris far better than a brush or spray-applied finish.

At Coating Lab in Onehunga, we powder coat trailer frames, components, and full trailers for Auckland boat owners, tradespeople, and enthusiasts.

Trailer Types We Powder Coat

  • Boat trailers — single and dual axle, galvanised and steel frames
  • Box trailers — small utility and heavy-duty box trailers
  • Bike trailers and cycle carriers
  • Car trailers and car transporters
  • Plant and machinery trailers
  • Camper and caravan chassis components

Trailer Components We Coat

  • Main frame and rails — the primary structural members
  • Drawbar — the A-frame or box section that connects to the tow vehicle
  • Mudguards — steel mudguards take gravel impact and road spray
  • Tow hitch and coupling mount
  • Jockey wheel mount and support
  • Cross members and load supports
  • Checker plate panels and floors
  • Winch frames and mounts — for boat trailers

Restoration of Rusty or Worn Trailers

A trailer that's surface rusty but still structurally sound is a prime candidate for restoration. Our process:

  1. Sandblasting: All rust, old paint, and mill scale removed to clean bare metal
  2. Inspection: Structural integrity checked — any cracked welds or damage identified
  3. Pretreatment: Chemical pretreatment for adhesion and additional corrosion resistance
  4. Powder application: Even electrostatic application including into joints and recesses
  5. Curing: Baked at 180–200°C for a hard, durable finish
  6. Quality check: Inspected for coverage and finish quality

New Trailer Coating

If you're building a new trailer or having one fabricated, having it powder coated before first use is the most cost-effective approach. New bare steel coated before any exposure will outlast a trailer that was used first and coated later.

Colour Options for Trailers

  • Gloss black and satin black — the most popular for trailers, looks clean and hides road grime
  • Charcoal and dark grey — similar to black but slightly more subdued
  • Galvanised silver tone — mimics the look of hot-dip galvanising
  • Custom RAL colours — match your tow vehicle or personal preference

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Before powder coating, we sandblast rusty trailer frames back to bare metal, removing all rust, old paint, and surface scale. This prep is essential for the coating to bond properly and is included as part of the restoration process.

Most steel and aluminium trailer components can be powder coated, including the main frame, drawbar, mudguards, tow hitch, jockey wheel mount, cross members, and checker plate panels. Components with sealed bearings or rubber parts may need to be removed first.

Trailers must always be disassembled before drop-off. We coat the individual components — frame sections, drawbar, mudguards, etc. Contact us with your trailer details.

Gloss black and satin black are by far the most popular for trailers, offering a sharp look that hides road grime well. Charcoal, dark grey, and galvanised silver tones are also common. We offer the full RAL range if you want to match a specific colour.

Proper surface preparation is the most important factor for longevity on boat trailers. A well-prepared and correctly coated trailer will significantly outperform paint. Contact us to discuss your specific situation and we'll advise on the best approach.
